Item Details:

In the early 1900's the "horse-pulled lunch wagon" began to fade away as America embraced the stand alone diner. Mostly due to the fact that they smelled less like horse, but also due to their affordability.

Diners were a "wallet friendly" alternative to a traditional, more formal, eating establishment. This was increasingly important during the Great Depression, when job availability was low and the cost of tuxedos was high.

Amidst the post World War 2 suburban boom, diners followed Americans out of the city and into the small town market, finding great success. As the Interstate Highway System was established in the 1960's, diners again found themselves following Americans as they desired to see the country. Some may say diners need to chill and back up a bit, while others would say savvy business owners make up the bedrock of the American dream.

Yet, as the diner continued to grow in popularity, it's namesake mug was gathering an audience of it's own. Although, what is now commonly known as the diner mug, didn't start out on a Formica counter.

In the early 1940's the U.S. Navy realized they had a need for a "thick walled" drinking vessel that could stand up to life at sea. The Victor Insulator Company won the contract and created a precursor to the modern mug, although without a handle. There was a concern the handle would break off as soon as the mugs began sliding around and smashing together in rough seas, much like a hot beverage demolition derby.

Gratefully, by the mid 1940's the diner mug had found both a handle and it's way into the hearts of Americans and their diners. It has even probably been said that by the 1970's you couldn't pour hot bean juice without hitting a "diner style" mug. These same folks may even probably go on to say it wasn't until 2025 that Allagash and Created Co. truly put the diner mug on the map!

These 9oz mugs feature a more updated and modern design, complete with custom artwork* specifically made for Allagash Brewing Co. by Artist Ty Williams. Using the highest quality clay available, these mugs are fired at 2,500 degrees to create "the most durable, vitreous surface possible".

Recreate the American diner experience in the comfort of your own home with a high quality, contemporary mug. Nametag, apron and sassy sitcom style attitude sold separately.

*Mug is commercial dishwasher safe, but to maintain the artwork, handwashing is recommended.
